NCBL [National Capital Baseball League]

All teams were back at it in week 3 as temperatures rose, so did the level of pitching in all tiers!  There were some dominant pitching performances in all tiers in week 3 including 2 no-hitters.

Tier 1

SAMBAT Performance of the Week

Jason Oviedo(NitaBeer Panthers) AND Alex Gagne(Capital City Cubs)
Oviedo > On May 24, Threw No-Hitter vs the Outlaws, retiring final 19 batters.
Gagne > On May 26, Threw No-Hitter vs the Outlaws, notching 8 K’s along the way.

As you can see above the Outlaws were victims of 2 straight no-hitters in week 3, but they salvaged the week with a 14-5 hammering of the Kingston Ponies on Sunday.  The Panthers started the Outlaws nightmare week on Tuesday when Jason Oviedo of the NitaBeer Panthers no-hit them and then on Thursday, in the Cubs only week 3 game, Alex Gagne also no-hit the Outlaws.

The Panthers and Nepean Brewers were the big movers of Week 3.  With the Panthers not giving up a run in their 2 wins and the Brewers winning 3 including giving the Kanata Athletics their first loss by scoring 5 in the 4th inning and holding on for an 8-5 win.

The Ponies had a very busy week as well, playing 5 games, winning both home games over the Battalion, but losing all 3 road games after only losing 4 games in 2015!!

Player of the Week Honourable Mentions

  • Jason Krottner (Brewers) – 2 for 4, Grand Slam, 6 RBI
  • Doug MacLean (Outlaws) – 4 for 4, 3 runs, 3 RBI (broke Outlaws 16.66 inning hitless streak)

Tier 2

MAXBAT Performance of the Week

Jordan Kritsch(Ottawa-Nepean Cardinals) – On May 26h, Jordan threw a complete game shutout vs 1st Place Winchester, striking out 15 to hand Winchester their first loss.

Tier 2 is now crowded at the top!! With the Winchester Sox losing their lone game, Marc Sports winning both of theirs, and the Braves winning all 3 of their games, Winchester/Marc Sports/Braves sit atop the division.  Nipping at their heels are Beau’s Misfits who have won 3 straight after losing their first 3 Tier 2 games.  The Metcalfe Mudd, Expos, and Cornwall River Rats are all currently scuffling to get their season’s on track.

  • Jonathan McNamara (Mudd) – 3 for 4, double, HR, 3 RBI
  • Martin Charron (Marc  Sports) – 3 for 4, walkoff hit, double

RONA Performance of the Week

Dave Rivers(Dukes) – On May 29th, hitting clean-up for the first time in his storied career, went 2 for 3, with 5 RBI, a double and a sac fly in an 8-1 win.

As always, Tier 3 is getting tight with just 2.0 games seperating the top 8 teams. In 2015, just 4.0 games seperated the top 8 at the end of the regular season.  The Mavericks sit atop the division after winning 8-6 and tying 10-10 and are unbeaten in 4.

The biggest mover of the week was the Dukes, as they went 3-0 to get back to .500. The Bombers lost a heart-breaker to the Sharks and remain winless .  the Rockets/Sharks/Lumberjacks/Red Sox ALL sit at just 2 losses so nothing is set in stone in Tier 3.
